RH Gallery - Current Exhibition - Jeff Thomson - New Work

The essence of Jeff Thomson's art and why it is so widely appreciated is that he takes 21st century New Zealand and reflects it back to us. He achieves this not by fixing our identity in one place but by traversing our past experience and culture and adding the ever changing aspects of a new New Zealand.

This exhibition represents an addition to the continuum of Thomson's repertoire of imagery. The references to our kiwi culture are now less overt, and his work is not as readily identifiable as objects of cultural significance. Further, while references to objects are present, a coil of rope, a woven mat, a braided knot, these sculptures are more abstract in form and the surfaces take on a greater prominence. In their simplicity and the pared back use of form there is a greater emphasis on line and process, or colour and plane. They are beautifully subtle in their form and aesthetically alluring in colour and texture.

Jeff continues to surprise us and captivate our attention. He inspires us to keep looking at his creations.

The exhibition runs from Monday 23 May to Thursday 30 June and is open 7 days from 11am - 4.30pm.
